Books for 1st Grade Close Reading Units
The more popular Mutual Core becomes, the more than we are hearing the term Close Reading. The main thought of Shut Reading is that students are truly comprehending a text and able to cite specific evidence from the text to answer their questions related to specific Common Core Standards. This may sound a little daunting, only it can even be washed in the primary grades- merely with a little tweaking!
By starting Close Reading in Kindergarten & 1st Grade, we are preparing our little friends to not simply be able to read, just too to understand what they are reading. This will greatly aid our students as they continue in school to comprehend whatever is handed to them.
In Kindergarten and 1st Course, you lot can't just hand a pupil whatever text and expect them to comprehend the text with the Common Core standards in heed. In these lower grades, you lot have to pull them along a little more by choosing a slightly more hard text and reading information technology to them- i, two and iii times with specific focus questions for each read.
I've done this with my little friends and allow me tell you- I was thrilled with their engagement and comprehension of our various texts. I practice the Close Reads over iii days- similar to a Shared Reading lesson. Twenty-four hour period 1 we have a focus that helps me ensure my piffling friends empathize the overall idea of our text. Then we dig deeper on the 2d day with a new specific focus based on Common Cadre Standards 4-vi and so on day three we read even deeper with a focus on CCSS 7-9. I outset thought my little friends would be like, ok teacher, we get information technology, why are we reading this once again!?! Merely thankfully they truly were just that into our texts and focus questions that it wasn't fifty-fifty upshot- phew! As a reading specialist, let's simply say this made me experience quite fantastic! 🙂
Then I took lots of pics (of form, I just can't resist) and wanted to share with all of you the basics of how to get Close Reading going in your chief classroom!

I am new to shut reads. Do you do these weekly, and do you lot do them whole grouping or in minor groups?
Hi Angela,
I follow a weekly format for close reading of texts just because you lot want to focus on the text with the repeated readings over several days. This can be done in whole group or small-scale group. Function of the goal is to get students discussing the text with their peers, so sometimes a whole group format is smashing. But I likewise actually honey doing them in small groups and then you can listen in on their responses to the text!
Hope that helps 🙂
Aylin
Cheers! That does help. I am going to do small-scale grouping to start with I think to go them used to them during my guided reading groups. Give thanks you for your quick response!
